    When judo & kendo collide

Oddly this was penalized no more severely than going out of bounds.

They made it private later, must be taking some heat over this. Here's the point from the longer match video, unfortunately without all the cool slo-mo that was added to the first one. Unfortunately I can't make the embedded video go to the direct time so either click on the link below or FF the embedded one to 4:05 or so.

I read a discussion about this somewhere else where a few people were saying that throws, dumps and chokes were allowed in Kendo before the 1950's. Any truth in that statement?

So Judo + Kendo = Thunderdome. If Its true about the pre 1950s rules, it must have been a nightmare to ref.

Yes, pre WW2 sweeps were allowed. Now they are a half-point penalty. This case with a deliberate attempt to injure should have been a DQ.

BTW that clip was from yesterday at the Euro championships. The offending player is Hungarian, I think the other guy is French.

Kendo guys are some of the best people at distancing, whether keeping away at the proper distance or merging to the proper distance. Apparently that guy didn't get the memo! However, I would definitely do Kendo if it was more like that. But honestly, it's a lot more difficult to keep away and then try to get closer without getting too close, than it is to just shoot in.

Distance was not the issue. It is SOP to move into or past your opponent after the attack or more properly as part of the attack. His hands were way too high though. If the opponent had just done a standard taiatari (body crash, like a hockey cross-check) he may well have dumped him on his ass the other way and everybody would havd said "well that's just kendo".
