I know, right? Why aren't they letting some little tiny 80-year-old aikido master in there to whip the crap out of all the fighters?

You and I have it figured out! It's a conspiracy!

There are many, many thousands of people who train in judo, in BJJ, and/or in MMA who are over 35, who are less than fit, and/or who roll / fight with people of far different weights frequently. A fair number of people here fall into one or more of these categories.

Most professional combat sports and many tournament competitions in martial arts are organized by weight class, including Boxing, Greco-Roman & Freestyle Wrestling, Tae Kwan Do, Kick-Boxing, Karate of various kinds, Muay Thai, Kung Fu (under the IKF among other contexts), Sambo, as well as the three that you weirdly grouped together, and no doubt others that have slipped my mind as I type.

This is intended to produce more even fights, lessen the chances of injury in some cases, provide a principle for sorting and matching fighters, no doubt among other reasons.

    What is your point?

They can and did (early UFC) and still do (Absolute BJJ). See in BJJ the thing that makes you noticed in not just wining your weight class bout also the ABSOLUTE, open weight class, against the top 3 winners of their respective weight class.

why they have to be fit.
They don't HAVE to be but it sure does HELP.

You mean besides all the ones who are over 35, right?
From Randy Couture (competed well into his 40s) or Dan Henderson (42) to current LHW Champ Anderson Silva (37) there are many guys who are over 35 and still fighting. So yeah their techniques are that good. You know why you don't see Systema guys in there? Because there techniques are no good at any age.

Putting aside that nothing you've posited is accurate in the strictest sense, why would it be at all confusing that when two people of a similar training level and style compete, that size, fitness and youth would be a benefit?

All the Systema guys, I know - would argue that their's is an MA based on principles and contain no techniques.

    Techniques being far too restrictive.
