Browsed around and didn't really see this covered. I fractured my feet(luckily a minor bone in one which I can put weight on, but my heel in the other that has me laid up) and it really sucks ass. Having to be off work laid up I've just browsed the net and everything I've read about calcaneus fractures are doom&gloom horror stories. Most are out of commission for months&many not able to walk or run right for years. Has anyone suffered from or know anyone that has sustained this injury? I'm holding on to that ounce of hope that those who have bounced back quick from it probably aren't the ones surfing the net looking for motivation.
Docs say it depends on severity, well I didn't need any surgery or plates(then again it's the NHS), but I'm in a plaster and when I asked the dock when I could drive he said it'd be about 3 feckin months!(at least then I could at least drive to the gym and work upper body) It's coming up to 3 weeks and I'm pulling my hair out. I was hoping to be training like a mad man especially since the weather is getting nicer, but don't know I'll be up walking much less running and sticking my heel into peoples' guts. Depressing as hell have half the mind to hop over across the street and waste away in the pub, my muscles in that leg are already cramping up.
Any advice would be appreciated. I know it's mostly listen to the doc&let it heal right, but I've been on the calcium and rubbing on comfrey oil so far, and going to cooking up bone broths when some of my wages hit next. If anyone knows of any "heelers" that bounced back alright, or some good alternative exercises I'd sure like to hear them. Cheers!

Minor help only - sorry to say.
I had long-term trouble with the Heel bone and I think it was owing a very harsh landing; my fault, really. The upshot is that it was painful and stayed with me for quite some time (months). Remember, it's load-bearing cos you're standing/walking etc.
You'll probably have to be patient (no pun intended) and protect it as much as you can until it decides it's OK again.
NHS? Fecking Brilliant. I really mean that.

Yikes! My wife broke her heel and didn't keep off of it. Her interpretation of "take it easy" involved hobbling arond on it anyways becuse there was work to do. I don't know if your injury is the same as hers, but her foot wasn't put in a cast because it wouldn't help. But all of her walking on it anyway made the heel bone spread apart before healing. Now she has one heel 1/4" wider than the other and a slight but permanent limp.
If the heel is broken, keep the hell off of it!

Thanks for the advice guys. I know I'm going to have to be patient, but I just want to reach the stage pretty quickly where I can at least put enough weight on it to push the clutch down. The boss is already on my case about returning to work, and not full duty but there's only 2 of us qualified to drive the work vans and they're swamped now. Like I said at least if I could drive I could go to the gym and sit on the machines&stuff. I'll be content with that and just baby it until it's ready. Next follow up is the 25th, so fingers crossed I don't have to wait as long as the doc thinks! Half the reason why I think he said 3 months was because say they do take this plaster off and give me a boot, it probably covers them if I get in an accident driving with it or something. Then again I'm far from being a doc lol

Thought I'd come back and update this just for record by any chance someone runs into the same problem in the future.
I left off with a follow up later in April. I went to have my plaster changed to a hard-cast, but the x-rays showed I was healing extremely well so the doc gave me one of those moon-walking boots and said to use it with the crutches and gradually come off them til my next follow up in June. Well sick-pay was killing me so I had to get back to work. I only used that boot 3 times, then put the work boots back on because the boss said that's the only way I could come back. I went back kind of afraid with the premature factor because I was limping, but had too. It was gradually less sore, and my walk improved to normal by my next follow up. The doc said usually at those he tells people if their foot will ever go back to being normal, commonly then starts physical therapy and tells runners and kickbxers to think of a new hobby! But he was surprised by my motions and weight bearing, so discharged me! (I think going back to work was my physical therapy lol but he did advise 'protecting' it by not sparring or running the next 6-12 months. Not quite happening!)
I started going to a kettlebells class after that, and back to training once a week in July. It's still sore in the mornings, and to run on. I ran home 3 miles one night and it didn't like that, but I'm now training MMA twice a week, and still at the kettlebells&weights. We did sprints, box jumping, and rope skipping at he last kettlebells and I managed just fine, so think the running will just take some time to get back too. Doc did say it's be sore for the next year, but since I can rool&light spar I'm content. Since cardio is crap now might try a spinning class as cycling and swimming are what's recommended for "heelers."
So if anyone does this and see's the same doom&gloom stories, be optimistic as hell!

Alright, decided to resurrect this thread one final time because I'm finally content that I got one up on that damn heel! A little over a year after the doc originally told me to think of getting a different hobby, I made my MMA debut about a month ago. Actually could have physically done it sooner, but was busy with work commitments and such. Comparing how much down in the dumps I was last year, I'm glad to be in a much better place this year, especially since I was supposed to make my debut before that injury. Training for that fight really changed my attitude with drinking too, to where I can actually go to the bar and socialise on coffees and sparkling water when training, and just feal 10 times more healthy. Now if only I can keep my day job from wrecking my back, everything will be peachy!

Did your heel heal?? Ok so bad pun, but a legit question. I broke my heel a few years back in the dumbest way possible. Luckily my bones repair fast.
