Yeah, when you show up to a place like that, you just think it is a point karate tournament. You don't want to put video or pics up of your fights, because you don't want people to think it was point karate competition. So the word doesn't get out. And if people show up to a school to train and ask for competition videos or pics, and see wrestling mats and forms being done in the background, they will head to the Muay Thai school.

By exotic I don't mean exciting...literally foreign. What Ming said makes sense. It's never really developed as a popular sport in the West because it never reached the critical mass (and organization) that MMA did.

You would have an easier time getting most Americans to correctly identify Szechuan food than identify a Sanda tournament.

And had it not been for MMA in the 1990's, very few people in America would know what Muay Thai was. They would think "Muay Thai" was chicken with noodles and spices.

I tried taking Sanda before, this was my experience, your mileage might vary.

    1) The school did not teach only Sanda, but also taught other forms like Wing Chun, so the classes were not as frequent as I expected.

    2) No padding on the floor, so takedowns and sweeps were not practised with the resistance that would make me confident I could pull it off in sparring or tournaments.

    3) Some of the dead pattern methodologies were transferred over to Sanda practise.

Instead you could go to a Muay Thai club and practice the same kick boxing technique with the added skills of clinch striking. You get what you expect.

I still love Sanda and would like to practice it, but can't be assed enough to put up with the rest of the stuff tacked on to it.

People who want to be like Jackie Chan don't want to get punched in the face. People who want to punch faces don't want to have to Jackie Chan up first.

I think this place http://wujikungfu.com/ probably teaches fighting without forcing forms on you.

Which is hilarious when you think about the fact that Jackie has probably taken more hits than anyone in the history of the planet, when you include falls & blunt objects. That nose of his has been broken so many times I doubt his septum is so deviated, it has its own sexual fetishes.

No at that school the forms are introduced the way Scientology introduces Xenu. Once they have your body with Sanshou for MMA, their xing yi/ tai chi forms and wuji stance training will dominate your mind forever.
