    Best way to maximize cardio?

    I see that cardio seems to be a major component that separates good from great. I'm not training for anything specific, but i want my cardio to be peak- as good as I can get it. I know jogging on a treadmill doesn't accomplish this, which I'm fine with because I hate the treadmill. What is the best approach to maximize my cardio? And how often should I do it?

    Cardio for what? A large part of conditioning is activity-specific. General conditioning can be developed with a variety of methods.

    "Good cardio" in a workout is a function of your heart-rate and time;
    that is you need to be able to maintain a target heart-rate for a given time.
    Jogging, cycling, swimming, jump-rope and bagwork can all accomplish this goal, as can many other exercises.

    If you can afford one, a heart-rate monitor is a great tool imo.
    If you get one, you'll probably want an interval timer built in.

    Duration, intensity and frequency depend on the athlete.

    Get off the Treadmill - it has a cushioning effect. Get out in your lunchtime and run for 30 mins. Vary it. Go running over Hills. Try Interval Training: Walk to first lamp post; trot to second lamp post; SPRINT to third lamp post. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Get the idea?

    Make it part of your daily commutes: run or bike to work, to the gym, to the grocery store; wherever you can.
    I personally detest running, but unless I'm hopping on the highway, I bike everywhere I go. At my peak, I was doing 70-ish miles a week, through the high and fuckish hills of Seattle.
    I got some good motherfucking cardio out of it.

    I may lean toward the, er, "portly" these days but in fairness, I trained Friday night (and it was freaking hard), Padwork and heavy Cardio on Saturday (1 hr 45 mins class), Trained Monday night (hard) and it was bitter cold in Essex...

    Oh yeah, I ran my 3 miles at lunchtime. Well, er, um, staggered, coughed and spluttered really...when I go back to work, I was sitting down and readying myself for a shower (Press Ups done and 1 set of Tricep Dips) when a bloke asked me if I was all right.

    A fair question. I was wondering myself but I assured him that I was just collecting myself before I did battle with the shower). The good news is that the snow started just after I finished :-)
