I roll with a blue belt who is pretty similar in size and strength to me. He wears a cup, I do not. I have never been hit in the nards while rolling with him, but he has used his cup as a weapon when he's in mount. He'll underhook my legs with his, and arch his back to drive his cup into my sternum while on top of me in mount. It's a dickish move, but to each their own, I guess.
I think a cup for grappling is pretty unnecessary, I'm way more concerned about my ears....and there's no such thing as cauliflower scrotum. -

I've been rolling for years and never really had any issues without a cup.
I've been doing judo for a few months, and we were doing some kind of inside trip where you step in, hook the leg and push forward landing in their guard. Needless to say, I took the most serious knee to the balls of my MA career drilling that move... -

erhm... Ultimately in Judo I have had a hard time finding one that doesn't seem to increase the pain of getting thrown. Also when I am doing my throws sometimes my legs need to be really close to each other (classic seoi nagi?); cups tend to get in the way of those throws for me. That being said I haven't done a lot of shopping around for cups i usually just buy some from big five or some sporting goods store.
I agree that a cup can be an awesome weapon in jujitsu class. Nothing like having a hard cup smashing up against your lower back as your getting choked out...
I never announce that I wear a cup, because I like to keep the element of surprise ;) -
