The Host Nation gets to nominate a Sport of their choice. For example:
1964 Japan. Judo (it got the nod over Karate)
1988 South Korea - TKD
So, for Brazil. Well, they've won the World Cup for Football (soccer to you 'Mericanz) so that's out. Hmm, Surfing. Could be. Boxing, well poor apart from the Great Eder Jofre...so what else? Ah yes, Royce Gracie, UFC legend - and rightly so. Yeah, that'll do...ah, but.....but....Graeco-Roman Wrestling is so very similar in the ground-game.
So that's it. BJJ is IN, so Graeco-Roman had to go....

I'm not surprised nor upset wrestling is not going to be part of the Olympics. The Olympics have gotten lame. Used to be U.S. against THEM! Now it is all about making money and who is THE next big Athlete...
Wrestling takes commitment, self sacrifice and in today's culture those virtues are lost and/or very hard to find. Sheer determination and dedication permeate wrestling, so it is not fucking wonder they bonked it- Cant market that **** nowadays.
Wrestling was still basically an amateur sport, those of us that did/do/coach/officiate the sport are all about the love of the sport, not money. It is a lifestyle!
So how do you market that? You don't these days and that's why it goes away. Pussification of the world, and as usual, the toughest sport from 4-18 inter-scholastically and collegiately pays the price and is now gone in the Olympics ass of 2020
At least we have MMA! Thank God! -

It's not about ticket sales. Wrestling regularly sells out its venue at every Olympics. It has everything to do with conflict of interest. IOC member has a family connection to the president of that dumbass horse modern pentathlon.... what a kick in the nuts.
While it is true that wrestling needs the Olympics it is more true that the Olympics needs wrestling. Taking wrestling out and adding golf and tennis and ribbon twirling and doubles ping pong makes the Olympics just plain stupid... kinda like that American Ninja Warrior show... let's just start calling it the Lamepics. -
