I can't offer any remotely expert feedback, but congratulations, Permalost.

Since my stick-fighting knowledge is pretty much limited to 2 viewings of "Arnis: The Sticks of Death" (once by myself, and then a second time to share the greatness with my sons), I hope you don't mind my asking a dumb question or two.

In the second fight, Alex clearly had a major reach advantage, but got skunked. Is reach not the significant factor that an ignorant n00b like me would think it is or was Alex's skill level so much lower that he was dominated despite having a substantial advantage from reach? Or is reach only a significant advantage if one knows how to use it?

Surely not? Sirc's tirade of homophobic abuse is part of his Socratic master plan to improve my life, isn't it?

Also, Sirc certainly doesn't want to fight anyone, as far as I can tell. He just wants to abuse, annoy and otherwise exploit this site's laissez-faire moderation to practice his dubious brand of comedy.

Oh, sorry to do you the dis-service. Could you post some video on this thread for your peers to look at, please?

    Clarification required from Dr Sleepless

Do you claim to represent USA or continental America?

Latin America could seriously bring down your average, and as for Canada, there nearly more European than Europe. I mean they speak french there for **** sake. They don't even speak french in France any more

I fear the result you are looking for, ie, an outraged Europe, isn't going to get much traction. It is a varied land with many diverse cultures. None of us particularly like or trust the others and secretly we are thinking 'Yeah, he's right, those other Europeans do suck'

Also I would like to suggest that you are over reaching in you jihad against Europe as a whole. Sure us western Europeans are soft and slow, but those eastern types, well they're just plain scary, and as for Russia. Well lets just say if Hitler and Napoleon couldn't do it I don't think Dr Sleepless is going to get very far. I mean can you even grow a novelty mostache?

My advice to you is to do what we usually do over here when we reach this kind of empasse. That is, pick on France. They're dicks, and secretly they crave the attention...Hey, this could be the begining of a beautiful friendship
Considered in the abstract the boxing ring is an altar of sorts, one of those legendary spaces where the laws of a nation are suspended: inside the ropes, during an officially regulated three-minute round, a man may be killed by his opponent's hands but he cannot be legally murdered. Boxing inhabits a sacred space predating civilization; or, to use D.H. Lawrence's phrase, before God was love. If it suggests a savage ceremony or a rite of atonement it also suggests the futility of such gestures. For what possible atonement is the fight waged if it must shortly be waged again... and again? The boxing match is the very image, the more terrifying for being so stylized, of mankind's collective aggression; its ongoing historical madness.

Pretty much the bold part. Namely, one should generally be attacking and retreating to a distance slightly outside of weapon range, but a lot of people will actually do that from slightly inside it without realizing it. The other thing that negates reach is striking with the middle of the stick instead of the tip of it.

Is one allowed to use the non-stick hand at all?

I've never been explicitly told not to use it, but I've been soundly punished every time I have.

Generally, in that sort of competition you use the "live" hand to "check" your opponent, so you trap his hand against his body so he can't strike or you give him a little push (most rulesets say no pushing but a "short, sharp palm strike" is ok - in my experience it all turns into shoving).

A major issue for a lot of the serious WEKAF (that's the most common type of ruleset for armour like Permalost is wearing in those vids) guys I've spoken to is that their non-stick hands get torn up by the metal grills on the helmets.

Here's some sparring after about 3 hours of belt testing. Not going to use it as an excuse for crappy technique, but it is why I appear so tired.
