No where in his stated linage does he say where or how he got his 7th Dan.

That's fairly easy to verify, I know the Otani family indirectly. And I know they have extensive records of all yudansha within what was the original Judo organisation in the UK. Leave that with me.

Suffice to say, there's a lot of people who've previously claimed members of the Otani family have awarded Judo rank, they use the Otani name as some means of superficially adding credibility to otherwise bullshit grades. I'll wager a good guess this is exactly one of those occasions.

Email fired off through the BJC website regarding Bryan Cheek's claim of grade(s) from Robin Otani

Dear Sirs,

Would you be in a position to clarify if a gentleman by the name of Bryan Cheek is known to your oganisation ?

One of Mr. Cheek's students states that Mr. Cheek was a 5 times Judo Champion and graded to 6th dan by Mr. Robin Otani, these claims have been made to Mr. Cheek's students and, having been involved in previous investigative process with a Mr. Name Redacted, I have been asked if I would approach your good selves to obtain any verification of Mr. Cheek's claims.

I am not looking to discredit the BJC in any way but would welcome any information as requested.

BJA's online Dan Grade register has one entry for Brian K Cheek awarded 1st dan in 1973.

Can't be certain whether this is the same Brian Cheek though.

How cute! There's a whole dispute about it too like the Korean and Japanese martial arts.

There's a significant different between shodan and rokudan :-)

Soke Bryan Cheek born 1951, attained his black belt (first Dan) in Judo after 11 years of trainings in 1969 from his Sensei, Japanese Master Otani Matsutaru. His trainings under Matsutaru Otani started in 1964. Having become one of his best English students, Soke Bryan Cheek trained under Master Matsutaru Otani until Matsutaru‘s death in 1977.

The last grade, gained from Otani Matsutaru, was 4th Dan in the art of Judo. After that the leadership of the Society of Judo was passed to his son, Robin Otani (the present British Judo Council President), who graded Soke Bryan Cheek to 5th and 6th Dan in the art of Judo.

From 1969 till 1970 Soke Bryan Cheek had an opportunity to train under outstanding Japanese Master Kenshiro Abbe (1975 - 1985), the holder of 8th Dan in Judo, 6th Dan in Kendo, Kudo, Aikido and Karate; Judo champion among 5th Dan holders and absolute Japan Champion in year 1933. Abbe Sensei was the youngest Judo 3rd, 4th and 5th Dan
holder and Japan Judo champion in its history (18 years old).

Soke Bryan Cheek opened his first dojo in London in 1972. The “Judo Ippon” club was famous for its rigid old Judo practices; it was considered shameful to win a fight without “ippon”. Sacrifice throws were considered not correct, as they were dangerous in a real life, not sport, fighting. “Kosen judo” wrestling was also practiced intensively in the dojo. Many of “Judo Ippon” students were successful in tournaments, and Soke Bryan Cheek himself became five fold British National Judo Champion.

After having achieved Master qualification in Judo, Soke Bryan Cheek began to seriously to engage in Ju Jutsu training. He trained under a specialist Committee headed by Professor James Blandell (the founder of British Ju Jutsu Association, consequently founded WJJF) and Professor Robert Clark. The name of style practiced was “Juko Ryu Ju Jutsu” - was borrowed during the relationships with “Jukokai International” and its leader Rod Socharnosky.

Mr. Cheek was indeed a member of the BJC for some years but only achieved the grade of 3rd Dan

However he has not been a member of our organisation since 1977
