I've never used one in sparring/fighting ever. I did use one while playing football. went up for the ball (I'm a goalkeeper) and the other teams striker charged me while I was in the air. Ref stopped play, but as I came down I smashed a downward elbow into his suprascapular (cos why the hell not). He walked away pretty sore and was for quite a while.
