Ruger 10-22.
Best value, great reputation, eats any load you feed it and boasts more after market options than an AR.
You can basically take a stock 10-22 and turn it into any platform you want. Specialised barrels. Any kind of stock you can imagine. Rails for opitics. Whatever you want.
And they are famously reliable as long as you use quality mags.
After that I'd personally consider it a toss-up between the Sig, the S&W or the Gatling. (Leaning heavily towards the Gatling gun... ...of course...) JMHO.Last edited by Mr. Machette; 1/18/2013 3:58pm at .

So, it looks like you're leaning toward a tactilovely .22 which is cool. I've got a 10-22 that I love.
But just to be different, I'll throw this out there. I hate to let a .22 discussion go by without mentioning the Browning SA-22. I love those fucking things. Such a great rifle. It's built like a brick shithouse and your great grandkids will be able to shoot it.
It's tiny and looks like a youth rifle but has a grownup length of pull, so it feels substantial when you shoulder it. Plus, it's a takedown rifle so you can carry it around in your pocket. Well, almost.
Yeah, it doesn't hold 100 rounds or anything but it's an awesome rifle for plinking or killing rabbits and such. It's made in Japan now, but I've compared the older Belgian and the newer Japanese models side by side and I think the Japanese version is better.
Maybe not the way you want to go, but worth mentioning. -
