I am an aikidoka and hopefully I'm not an arrogant twat? I certainly dont go preaching to folks. However I dont think aikido completely sucks but you have to look at it realisticly. Its ok for self defense against knob heads and such but in the ring/cage yeah it sucks! I wouldn't try and make out its the deadly and that cus its not and the way some clubs train is so false its scary!

As for dodging punches, sure thats one of the ideas, but you wouldn't go round bragging about it because your gunna look silly! Same could be said for a few other arts tho!

This is always the impression I got from Aikido too. I have seen people who can fight by blending their momentum with somebody else's, never opposing, etc., and when they spar or compete it looks graceful. I aspire to that.

All of those people though got there through having amazing basics and putting in their ten thousand hours of real practice. They didn't get graceful by pretending to be so with compliant partners until one day they could do it with non-compliant partners. Most aikidoka have a "fake it til you make it" approach to martial arts practice.

(I did over a year of aikido while having a useless black belt and have seen plenty.)

There's a time in any fight when it's appropriate to meet force with force and there are times when it is just as appropriate to avoid such force. The problem with most if not 99.999% of aikidoka, is that they fail to grasp this concept because it's not included in their day to day training. Thus they see force on force as wrong. Despite the fact that many martial traditions have a greater bias toward this methodology.

I studied both Iwama and Aikikai versions of Aikido to middle senior dan grade. I never had issues with what I was studying (but then by background isn't run of the mill) so I see where aikido fails as a means of fighting.

For some reason Aikido seems to attract a larger number of budo-snobs, perhaps that's to do with the whole ideological thing of Ueshiba - who really knows. What I do know for sure, is that it isn't the physical discipline's fault - it's people who are the weak part of the equitation. IE their attitudes.
