    Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't many Okinawan karate dojo going the full contact route when it comes to kumite? (Again, correct me if I'm wrong.)

    Like many things, it really depends on the instructor. Some branches of Goju-Ryu practice iri kumi, which is an in-close, full-contact type of sparring, and other styles either do full-contact, semi-contact or non-contact sparring depending on what the instructor wants to train people for.
