My main EDC is a Benchmade AFCK sprint in M390:



The original model got me hooked on good cutlery way back in the early 90s & the recent sprint runs were pretty much grail knives for me. I've always loved the ergonomics & overall feel of it. Having it with the Axis lock & M390 steel is just overkill.



I rotate it out with the black bladed version of the sprint model & an old D2 Axis lock version from the late 90s that I re-finished to a dull mirror polish. I just really like this model & it has put a temporary halt to my folding knife habit. All the other folders I want seem to cost a bit more than they're worth to me since getting these sprint models last year.

Occasionally I'll rotate in the newer model Spyderco Police 3:



Similar basic ergonomics to the AFCK but thinner side to side & a bit longer. Not as smooth, being a back lock, but it's real solid & flat in pocket.

My EDC is an old CRKT Wrangler, bought specifically so it didn't look threatening to campus cops back when I was in college. The blade is short enough that I don't have to worry about any legal restrictions for where I can carry it. However...

If I get back on the Spyderco bandwagon anytime soon, I'll probably get either a Manix or one of their karambit style SALT series knives.

My most used knife is my Spyderco Tasman Salt, with SpyderEdge. I call it my "little monster," and it doesn't give a **** what packing materials are between me and the stuff I paid for. It was also fantastic in the garden, particularly when harvesting bell peppers.

Jesus Christ. What constitutes a suitable reason?

Basically anything you can tell the police that won't result in a fine/jail/confiscation.

Also, if a police officer decides your knife "was designed as a weapon", you're in trouble.


Here are the main laws I found pertaining to carrying knives where I live.

Weapons Categories Regulation 1997

Page 8, Section 7A Category M weapons (c),
any knife so designed or constructed so as to be used as
a weapon that while the knife is held in 1 hand, the blade
may be released by that hand;

Weapons Act 1990
Page 74, Section 51 Possession of a knife in a public place or school

(1) A person must not physically possess a knife in a public place
or a school, unless the person has a reasonable excuse.
(2) It is a reasonable excuse for subsection (1) to physically
possess a knife—
(a) to perform a lawful activity, duty or employment; or
(b) to participate in a lawful entertainment, recreation or
sport; or
(c) for exhibiting the knife; or
(d) for use for a lawful purpose.

Example for subsection (2)(a)—
1 A person may carry a knife on his or her belt for performing work
in primary production.
Examples for subsection (2)(b)—
1 A scout may carry a knife on his or her belt as part of the scout
uniform.
2 A person may carry a knife as an accessory while playing in a pipe
band.
3 A fisher may carry a knife for use while fishing.

Examples for subsection (2)(d)—
1 A person may use a knife to prepare or cut food at a restaurant in a
public place or when having a picnic in a park.
2 A person may carry a pen knife or swiss army knife for use for its
normal utility purposes.
(3) However, it is not a reasonable excuse to physically possess a
knife in a public place or a school for self-defence purposes.
(4) In deciding what is a reasonable excuse for subsection (1),
regard may be had, among other things, to whether the way
the knife is held in possession, or when and where it is held in
possession, would cause a reasonable person concern that he
or she, or someone else in the vicinity, may be threatened or
harmed.

Here is an article on the new laws introduced 2 years ago. This just gets more ridiculous. A "Flick-knife" is now anything you can open with one hand.

I carry Benchmade's Griptilian everyday at work. I've had it for just under a year, and I really like it. It's solid and does all kinds of things that have resulted in broken blades on other knives. I am not nice to my work knives.



When I'm not at work, I carry a Benchmade 530. It's light and slim unlike the Griptilian, but the blade is still strong enough to carry out most cutting tasks.



I'm not a hardcore Benchmade guy or anything. It just happens that those two knives suited my needs the most.

I think the Griptilian is the best EDC to date. Lightweight, strong and sharp as hell!
