What can be done to Mc Dojos / frauds

With the martial arts industry being self regualted, what can be done to frauds and Mc Dojos?

You got people who just make up styles from bits and pieces of other arts.
There is nothing illegal about it.
You got Mc Dojos teaching garbage and charging big bucks.
There is nothing illegal about it.

Is there nothing that can be done?
Even informing their students could be illegal (slander).

Looking for action to take instead of just complaining about it.

Well, this is the way I see it.

People who buy into McDojos often have insecurity issues, right?

So if we mock their school enough here, they might feel ashamed and stop going there.

Other than that, I think that the only thing you can do is tell people who trust you about the dangers of McDojoism.

I've got a better idea. What would you do in this case? What's illegal about making up your own style. Bruce Lee, Ed Parker, hell Taekwondo was an amalgamation of several different karate and korean systems. So what is viable and what isn't. Do you even know what makes a place a Mcdojo? If you're venting fine but you've got to come at us with more than this.

Maybe we could write a book .. call it "excerpts from Bullshido forums" and hand out pamphlets at the door to TKD schools. :P

A friend of a friend used to walk into blackbelt conventions armed with a shotgun (lloaded with blanks).

Other than that:

Send them to bad suburbs dressed in their MA paraphenalia.
Question them extensively about their art.
Ambush them.
Make friends with scary people and send said scary people around
Research, research and again research
Ask them how many times they have used their style to defend themselves against real threats
If they have an Asian etc obssession, feel suspicious
If they disparage certain tricks or styles, question them as to why
If you find a McDojo, tell your MA practising friends to avoid it

LOL that would be ****ing great....

I suggest a nation wide McDojo vs. True MA competition and make it a law to post the placing of that Dojo

or we could bitch about it on Bullshido :p

People should take it upon themselves to research something as important as self-defense. Honestly, if someone is lame enough that they can write off MMA, BJJ and the advancements the martial arts community has made in the last 10 years, calling them useless - favoring instead a McDojo - then they would most likely suck at MMA too. They would be just as closed-minded and block-headed. If someone wants to educate themselves, they will. That is why this forum is here - for people who come online looking for information. Those who don't care enough to question and test what they have learned - let them get their ass kicked.

Of course, you have young people and people who are ignorant being duped into following really questionable teachers. There is a need to spread the word too. I think the UFC and Pride and organizations like that are doing a fine job of spreading the word.

What can we do as individuals? We can educate people on a one-on-one basis or hold seminars to promote good schools. It might be expensive but think of what it could mean to your local schools if they were all invited to attend a seminar put on by Frank Shamrock or one of the Gracies. I'm not sure how you would raise funds for that - it's just an idea.

You could also tack a sign on their door that says, "Sick man of [your county]" and challenge them to a duel. Oh! .. That reminds me, I need to develop those pictures.
