Karate: Is this normal? (Video)

I was Googling for local Karate schools and stumbled upon the website of a school that teaches Isshinryu Karate. I'd never heard of Isshinryu so I searched Google images and Youtube to see what it's all about. It turns out that the local school has a video on Youtube:

Is this an accurate reflection of what Isshinryu is all about? I'm just trying to get an idea of whether or not it's for me.

Can't really comment on Isshin Ryu, and you don't say whether you've trained any karate before, but a video featuring several overweight men acting a bit douchey is commonly an accurate representation of what karate is about.

they look like they've got a nice enough dojo and I'm sure they don't spend all their time breaking boards in black gis. Go try a class or two.

60% serious, going off my own experience. Karate dojos tend to have a few dads in dogis who long to be Chuck Norris/David Carradine and are unable to act their age, as seen in that vid. It's not generally representative of karate students though. I've never seen the black gi thing. Brown yes, but not black. Ditto for that katana bullshit.

(apologies to any young-at-heart karate dads who rock the black gi and samurai sword look)

Search through the post history of myself and Hedgehogey to get some Isshinryu stories.

There are some Isshinryu schools that are this focused on looking badass and yelling and board breaking, but most are a little more toned-down.
