    Re: okuri ashi harai

I hit a harai tsurikomi ashi for the first time the other night, against a fully resisting partner. It was awesome.

Stepped in for a typical ouchi gari set-up (I'm a lefty), with a big emphasis on selling the technique by snapping the lapel grip and applying a ton of forward pressure. As uke drew his left leg back, I swept the ankle and shoved the sleeve grip into his left hip. It worked really well.

The problem that I'm having now is that my partners are making their feet less available. I need some other ideas on how to close the distance.

Not sure whether this thread is still about Okuri ashi barai or Harai tsurikomi ashi, but these may be of use on the former.

it's about both now. I basically want to have one of uke's feet run into the other in every way humanly possible.

When practicing with a compliant uke as you sweep the foot their heels should click together.

There are a bunch of trailing leg sweeps in this video, with some cool set-ups. Posting it here for reference, and as a reminder to review and work on them. I'm referring to both harai tsurikomi ashi and okuri ashi harai as a 'trailing leg sweep' for the sake of condensing the information into one thread. I know the nomenclature isn't necessarily correct, but it helps me categorize the two together.

They occur at these spots in the video:

:25 trailing leg sweep one way and then the other
1:09 two successive trailing leg sweeps
1:13 uchi mata-style entry into trailing leg sweep
1:26 uchi mata-style entry into sasae tsurikomi ashi
(not the same, I know, but it looks cool as hell)
1:34 sasae tsurikomi ashi into a trailing leg sweep
1:35 ouchi-style entry to trailing leg sweep
