A German guy goes to a shinto shrine where war criminals are honored. He mentions that in Germany, honoring war criminals is a crime. This pisses off alot of the rightists who continue to honor war criminals. Normally, in the civilized modern world, honoring war criminals who are responsible for slaughtering millions of civilians would be frowned upon.

This is the difference between the Rising Sun and other military flags. Japanese Imperialism that terrorized the Asian continent is still very much alive. You need to realize the Rising Sun is not simply a symbol of the Japanese armed forces. It symbolizes the continuation of Japanese aggression since more than a century ago.

Most modern Japanese are NOT imperialists. They are nice people that get along with most other Asians. However, the extreme-right side of Japan, the kind of people that actually like to sport the Rising Sun flag, are essentially the Japanses version of the Neo-Nazi.

I don't have a problem with Japan or the general Japanese population. I train a Japanese martial art, and I also have some Japanese friends who are pretty cool. But the extreme right side of Japan which try to cover up history and market symbols of hate? That I have a problem with.
