C2CAM: They Come In Peace... Not
The Alien War Machine will arrive on Dec. 21. Will you fight?
(Note: Can anyone explain why a hostile invasion force wouldn't simply dump asteroids on us, or release a lethal, fast-acting virus or bacteria targetted against humans? Why risk their crews in tripod attack vehicles?) -

-because they need humans as slaves to extract resources on Earth gravity with Earth atmosphere (some ancient aliens folks submit this seriously)
-because the low-tech conquering and killing is part, or most, of the fun for a particularly aggressive species. Like the Predator. -

Which makes one ponder the cost/benefit of organic slaves versus robotic machines.
Also an interesting ponderable: would such an aggressive species survive itself long-enough to achieve interstellar travel? But we need to consider our own species as a datapoint for this...
Please, all, discuss. -

Not to mention the logistics of communicating with, feeding and maintaining your slaves.
Well, in the fields of aerodynamics, anatomy, computing and manufacturing, a lot of advances come from wartime even though its a small fraction of total time. Also an interesting ponderable: would such an aggressive species survive itself long-enough to achieve interstellar travel? But we need to consider our own species as a datapoint for this...

Then there's the possibility of a Carrington Event.
A what?
A Carrington Event. A massive solar storm that hits the earth with an EMP effect knocking out everything electrical.
It would be a bit like SM Stirling's Emberverse novels, or that rip off Revolution TV show. We would be reduced to 19th Century technology overnight. But firearms would still work, so less swashbuckling.
