I wonder if guys in the Middle East ever wrote that down somewhere, but as a joke at the backward-ass illiterate minority-killing Europeans.

    Fucking History Channel.
The Mayan calendar ends in December heralding the end of the world.

    Bring it on, Devil!

Sorry Mr. Wez. I know you were really excited about that new boa.
**** no. Scrotum, head, and back already shaved, football pads prepped and ready. Chainsaw on hockey stick revved. As soon as that fucking clock hits 12, I'm setting cars on fire and heading for WalMart.

That's just the thing. No, the Mayan calendar doesn't end. It just cycles.

A war has been about to kick off there for 40 years, in fact I'd argue there have already been quite a few wars fought there....same ****, different day.

I'm guessing I'm the only one here who has read the Popol Vuh? That's the Mayan creation myth, and a few other myths, in book form.

I was obsessed with mythological creation stories as a young man in the early 90's. I read all that I could find, including the Popol Vuh.

So, long story short, it's not the end of the world. It's supposed to be a time of transformation that will lead to greater harmony and understanding of ourselves and our place in the cosmos.

Who knew the Mayans were forerunners of the hippies?

Anyway you look at it, however, it's still humanity doing our tired schtick of making the universe a more anthropomorphic place.
Shut the hell up and train.

Hmmm, I'll take my chances with the end of the world
Considered in the abstract the boxing ring is an altar of sorts, one of those legendary spaces where the laws of a nation are suspended: inside the ropes, during an officially regulated three-minute round, a man may be killed by his opponent's hands but he cannot be legally murdered. Boxing inhabits a sacred space predating civilization; or, to use D.H. Lawrence's phrase, before God was love. If it suggests a savage ceremony or a rite of atonement it also suggests the futility of such gestures. For what possible atonement is the fight waged if it must shortly be waged again... and again? The boxing match is the very image, the more terrifying for being so stylized, of mankind's collective aggression; its ongoing historical madness.
