So should muay thai switch to MMA gloves

I was watching this last night wonderering why MMA fighters were getting standing counts. But no definatly muay thai.




Does to a point make sense. Traditionally the Thais did not want to wear the gloves and it would have to make the grappling a bit more sensible. You are hitting people with elbows and knees anyway.

So is there a glove change in the works?

It would be too dangerous as under the boxing gloves they have broken glass glued to their hands.

But despite all I learned from Van Damme movies, it makes a lot of sense to use grappling style gloves instead.

Well in general the cage is also an inherently safer device to fight in as it is very hard to be thrown out of.

I did notice one of the fighters dominating with double underhooks though.

I know that pro Bokator fights are done with MMA gloves:

(Bokator is believed to be one of the Khmer / Cambodian roots of all South East Asian boxing styles: Muay Thai, Muay Lao, Lethwei, Pradal Serey, etc.)

And I believe that Lethwei (from Burma / Myanmar) is generally practiced either with wraps or with MMA gloves:



So it wouldn't be unprecedented.

And thanks for posting the link to the CMT / Caged Muay Thai fight! I'd never seen that before. I could see something like that (caged K-1 style fights with MMA gloves) becoming very popular with potential MMA fans who are are less interested in the grappling / submissions aspects of martial arts.

I might have jumped the gun on Lethwei. It turns out that there are two sets of rules: traditional and sport.

Matches today are carried out in both the traditional manner and a more modern offshoot called "Myanma traditional boxing" which started in 1996. The latter was based on the sporting outlook of Muay Thai and uses a point system. If a knockout occurs, the boxer is revived and has the option of continuing the bout. In traditional fights, the winner is the first to draw blood which may be wiped away three times before victory is declared.
