Battlefields haz drama? No way!
Shame. A lot of landlords over here won't except housing benefit. I was hoping there'd be something in the tenancy agreement that you could use to get him turfed off the lease rather than you getting shafted again.

Even better if he has damaged something that's covered on the inventory. Explain to the landlord that you would rather he was off the lease before he loses more of the deposit.
Can't have a chap struggling if I can help. Good luck.

Battlefiels, first of all let me say that I like you. I really do. From what you have written, and since you seem to like a lot to write, I may tell that you are a nice person that would be a good friend if we had the opportunity to meet in person.
But, you are just the perfect victim waiting to be exploited. Do you realize that things just get this ugly in your life because you allow them to get to this point?
Something about you being a "softie" at heart as you say. It's just weakness. You can be as softie as you want with people that deserves it. But not with people that are scamming you!
BTW, you should've stopped the guy the first moment he made any threat to you. Why let things get uglier? No need to hurt him. If a asshole starts to threaten you in a situation like the one you described, just escalate the violence yourself and see if they will follow. If they do, do what is needed to put them in their place. Don't want to give them the reason to whine afterwards? Just put them to sleep while you slowly talk them into respecting you. If you have ever been to a situation of being choked out and not being able to stop it, you should know how terrifying it is even for trained persons. You believe you're gonna die.
It's not always that you should avoid escalating violence. Peace only exists when the one with the bigger stick says so. I bet that the guy kicked you on the back just because he sensed weakness. -

Battlefields, I would say 1) you seem like a pretty good and clear headed dude but 2) if you moved in with the guy already knowing he was a drunk then- albeit however inadvertently- you brought the drama on yourself.
Happens. I had a few less than optimal roommates in my 20s which I'm guessing is your age range. Just chalk this one up to experience. I'm betting you won't room with anymore drunks.
Good, well written, story though. -

Legally this would be risky in the USA, not sure about Australia. It's also a huge safety concern because his room mate obviously knows where he lives and has access to his personal belongings and personal information; plus his threats and cheap shots are indicative that his roommate is not only an ungrateful friend and an alcoholic but a bully as well. Battlefields is in a pretty crappy situation and it's a good thing that he maintained his composure; although I wouldn't want to bring my girlfriend into an unstable environment such as the one he described.
