I would have said the Punjab for India or maybe Kashmir (if we were going old-school), but I would have been wrong either way. Apparently it was the very small region of Oudh (Awadh), near Nepal. Or Baluchistan (Balochistan) if we are including places that aren't part of India now.

Before you try that for bar bets, you might want to clarify what counts, though. Pre-partition or post-; is being run by the British East India Company sufficient or are you only counting places with a British governor or attached to the Empire? How are you defining region?

You know, if you are going to set up a sucker question, you don't want the set-up question to be so fuzzy. (Unless you are being verbally loose and talking about the British taking (and later leasing) Hong Kong, which isn't a province, though its status under the PRC's federal system is similar to that of a province.)
