See, a real PHD/psychology major/scientician would have gone on to answer that both in terms of presend day India, Victorian scope of India, and would have passively aggressively derided me for not knowing the difference in a clever snarky manner.
I leave this thread disappointed. -

I would have said the Punjab for India or maybe Kashmir (if we were going old-school), but I would have been wrong either way. Apparently it was the very small region of Oudh (Awadh), near Nepal. Or Baluchistan (Balochistan) if we are including places that aren't part of India now.
Before you try that for bar bets, you might want to clarify what counts, though. Pre-partition or post-; is being run by the British East India Company sufficient or are you only counting places with a British governor or attached to the Empire? How are you defining region?
Please enjoy this Marmoset from Balochistan during Intermission.
You know, if you are going to set up a sucker question, you don't want the set-up question to be so fuzzy. (Unless you are being verbally loose and talking about the British taking (and later leasing) Hong Kong, which isn't a province, though its status under the PRC's federal system is similar to that of a province.)
Please enjoy this Rhesus Macaque from Hong Kong also.
I've dozed off twice while composing this, so, with apologies to all non-simian readers, I'll stop. By the way, I stumbled across your Steven Seagal ballad, which was quite awesome, Sri Hanuman. -

Wow. Just wow. I spend time poking around, finding all the sad details just to feed the troll. Then after I feed him, I see that he has already complained that I didn't do what I was in the middle of doing and stomped off.
That'll teach me to interrupt posting here in order to talk to my family on the phone. Kids, shmids! Next time, I hang up on *anybody* so that I can provide prompter predictable service.
All I can say is that I hope the monkey pics go some small way toward expiating my failings. -
