Somebody mentioned pagans desecrating a Jewish temple, didn't they? The best response to that is to cite Deuteronomy 12:3 and then smugly pronounce: "Payback is a bitch, ain't it?" Usually a good hackle-raiser, that.

Anyway, desecration is what temples are for. Why else have all sorts of corners to piss in, lots of walls to pull down as a form of exercise and all kinds of gold-statue (or whatever) **** to be carted off? Besides, desecrating an "eternal-people" temple is a valuable reminder to them that NOTHING is eternal.

They get a priceless lesson in the impermanence of things, the pagans get a place to piss, some exercise and gold-statue (or whatever) **** to carry off, archaeologists get a nice puzzle to piece together, and the religiously-righteous get something to wail about (their all-time fave activity). Temple-desecration is a win-win for everyone concerned.
