I was at a Jujutsu camp over the weekend, and earned my orange belt(4th kyu) after almost a year long hiatus due injury. During that time a new guy joined the club, and he's the same rank as me. Spending the weekend with him was a fucking pain, since whenever we talked about grappling(which was often), he started recalling back to a few occasions when he made me tap. Feels like he's bragging over a fucking sparring victory. He's the one single thing that I find uncomfortable with training at the moment. Not the injuries or the pain, not the boot campish cardio we do, but that fucking guy.

    Sorry, offtopic rant.

I only trained BJJ for about 6 months, and that was a few years ago. But, what I remember about the beginning is that I would get so claustrophobic. I used to tap just to get some space and recover from the panic attack. I eventually got used to it, though. Maybe you should just stick it out for a few months and see what happens.

Judo is usually done in a better training environment than BJJ, IMHO, and is a little easier to understand from your TMA background. It's also cheap. And effective.

Even if you only throw judo in there a day a week, it'll help you achieve that well-roundedness you are looking for.

Sure some people like to hug and some like to hit, but I wonder what the psychological reasons behind that are.

Who's making you talk to the guy in the first place? Tell him to **** off, or, better, kick his ass next time you spar/roll/randori. Use it for motivation.

That will happen. Keep training and you'll have that problem less and less over time. In any case, if you land in the correct position for a side or back fall, you don't really have to slap the tatami.

Now, if you tori sucks and is just dropping/landing on you, then good luck.

I've done a bit of striking and grappling. It seems like grappling is more strategic to me, although there is strategy in striking too. Its just that striking seems to have more focus on reflex, and there are fewer positions to remember and learn.

In grappling there is no end to the positions you can find yourself in, and the complexity is so deep you can study it for years and still learn new positions or attacks. This is why bjj is often compared to chess.
