    Hell yeah! Hell no!

Freestyle Kung Fu Fight Club Brisbane?

    Hey all,

I was thinking of giving the Freestyle Fight Club in Richlands, Brisbane, a go.

The Kung Fu they teach is apparently Choy Lee Fut with Muay Thai, Chinese Boxing and knife and gun street defense mixed in. They also train full contact.

They seem to do pretty well in comps.

So sounds good in theory. However, I was wondering if anyone had been there or knows someone who has? Just after a review on the place basically.

    Thanks!

For the benefit of members here, the link is: http://freestylekungfu.com.au/

    From the website:
    About our club

Freestyle Fight Club offers a friendly family atmosphere. Our 400 square meter state of the art training fight centre has 160 square meters of impact matting, a full size boxing ring & Octagon cage, personal training studio and supply shop. Our instructors are fully accredited through the Australian Sports Commission. We offer classes for beginers to professionals at any fitness level.
Good facilities. "Fully accredited through the Australian Sports Commission" means not much, really, except that they are recognised as a sports facility. Unless **** has changed, which I doubt.

    Our Philosophy

We believe that every style of Martial Arts has something good to offer. It is our belief that it is not the style that creates the individual but the individual that creates the style. It is totally up to the individual applying the acquired technique that determines the effectiveness not the style. We focus on the individual's strengths and weaknesses as everybody is built slightly differently. Some people are tall, some are short, some are weak in areas and other strong. And as men and women are genetically different some techniques that suit one will not suit the other. Therefore we will teach each student all of the techniques that work and the reason behind each technique and allow them to apply the technique with their own creativity and personal expression.

    Hmmm.

    Instructors:
Sifu Frank Mechler has 30 years training experience in Martial Arts, holding both a black belt and a master sash in Choy Lee Fut Freestyle Kung Fu and a black belt in Moon Lee Tae Kwon Do. Sifu is also trained in Muay Thai Kickboxing, Western Boxing, JuJitsu and Judo.
Sifu now teaches his own blend of full contact Kung Fu which has been approved by the Australian Kung Fu and Wu Shu Federation. Sifu Frank is a fully accredited Kung Fu instructor certified by the Australian Sports Commission. Sifu is also a fully trained sports remedial rehabilitation specialist.
Sifu's personal training belief is that "Only through hard work over time, do you accomplish great skill".
    MMA Instructor Brandon:

Brandon began training in Thai Boxing in 1999 then took up Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu in 2000. Brandon has been fighting in MMA for 10 years and has held XFC lightweight and junior welterweight championships. Brandon also has training in Traditional Ju-Jitsu and Aikido and now shares his knowledge & experience with the students at the Freestyle Fight Club.
    MMA Fundamentals Instructor- David:
David has trainined in Kung Fu for 8yrs and BJJ for 3.5 years, he holds a black sash and blue belt in these arts respectively. David has been fighting MMA for the last 2 yrs and has won his last 2 fights at FWC and Brace for War! He is now teaching a beginners MMA fundamentals class at the Freestyle Fight Club.

Firstly, semantics, what does "also trained in Muay Thai Kickboxing, Western Boxing, JuJitsu [sic] and Judo" mean, exactly? Why does his Kung Fu rank and experience clearly take precedence over these arts, especially considering he teaches the boxing and Muay Thai classes? We've seen this before.

Secondly, a blue belt in BJJ and black sash in Kung Fu teaching MMA Fundamentals? I get that he is a purported fighter who has won fights (the lack of surnames makes verification extremely difficult), I'm just not sure I would pay money for instruction from a blue belt when I could find several gyms, mine included, whose fundamentals classes are taken by at least a purple if there is absolutely no one available and primarily by a brown or higher.

I'd be really interested to see the results from an independent source of the instructors' wins, I'm not saying they are fake, but it is a bit of a stupid omission, in my opinion, if they are trying to get pro fighter interest.

I cannot find any evidence that the gym itself has produced any fighters of note.

    Thanks for the reply :)

Yeah, the details on the site do seem a bit sketchy. I'm not sure if it's just a poorly done website (looks like a quick home job) and they just didn't think about the content and wording properly, or if it's something else.

Where do you train, if I may ask?

If it helps, the MMA guys name is Brandon Bell. Can't seem to find David's last name anywhere, though.

Cheers, mate, I did notice that Brandon's last name was Bell when I was looking at the class times but had already posted. If someone wants to do the looking for verification, go for it, I'm not in the mood. Also, I'm at work.

You're right, the website looks either sketchy, or just a bodgy job of content, I'm not saying it is a **** place to train, just that there are things in that website that make me not want to train there. If you are going to advertise, do so with your best foot forward, nahmean?

I train at Advance Martial Arts. If you are in the Richlands area it is much of a muchness to go to either our Coorparoo or Springwood facility. Tell 'em Battle sent you.

They won't know who Battle is, but tell them anyway.
