I'm just a wee bit confused by the OP. If you are talking moving in grips with no throw then either foot could be forward. Once you go to throw then assuming it's a right-handed throw your right foot takes the lead. For example, seoinage classically you are going to step across onto your right foot, spin on that into uke, plant your left foot and throw. If you do it the other way it's a left throw from a right grip. Which is fine but as you are working on basics maybe something to learn later.

yes you can do a right handed seoi nage with your left foot forwards but you simply have to rotate almost 270 degrees opposed to only rotating 180 degrees if your right foot is already forward.
It is a lot easier to do a right handed techniques with your right foot forward and if your left handed then its easier if you have your left foot forwards -

Yes, you should change your stance unless you are also throwing from the left side. I’m right handed but since I almost exclusively grip with a double lapel grip I find myself with my left foot forward a lot. Honestly, I switch back and forth with what foot is forward depending on what my opponent is doing or what his grip is.
Admittedly, the way I do Judo is a bit unorthodox but it works for me.Last edited by Dave R.; 10/23/2012 12:46pm at .

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
Thanks for the advice. Been working on my stance and it has definitely helped. Will keep working on the basics before trying different stances.
Had the most awsome weekend training with some Welsh National players. Was incredibly humbling, yet really great for learning. They gave me some hints on what I can do to impove my posture. (Head up, standard grip right foot forward. Keep elbows in on the ground)Last edited by timothius; 11/25/2012 11:38am at .
