    Hell yeah! Hell no!
Any time I hear an unusual noise whilst sleeping, I leap from bed with my dukes up a moment or two before I wake up. So far I haven't punched anyone, thankfully, because it's usually my wife just going to the bathroom.

Our plan goes like what others have said: I go investigate/buy some time while my wife gets the kids out. If I don't join her in a minute, she calls the cops. It ain't perfect, but it's what we got.

My weapon of choice is a 23-oz framer's hammer. I call her Mjolnir. (normal framing hammer's about 16 oz.) She's always on my person.

Well... This is what happened last time.

It's not the uninvited guests I mind so much as the clean-up. What a mess they leave.

On, or in? Never mind. Where you keep it isn't for anyone else to judge. Long as you're not uncomfortable. Pulling it out of there though, right in front of a burglar, should send him outta your residence good 'n' fast...

I just want to note that the banner at the top of my page is advertising -- yes indeed -- framer's hammers.

Complacency is a killer. Cops are nice targets because they usually have a lot of guns and work 12 hour shifts. I'm glad you've found a neighborhood with no reported crime though.

I was curious how many of us would list call the cops in the response. The FIRST thing I would do is get the phone, unlock it, and make the call, as I investigate the sound. That's 5 seconds, to have someone on the way.

For years, I lived in the hood, but now I'm in the outskirts of the city. It's different out here, and a lot of cops from various precincts live here. It's more rare to have drama, as the vast overwhelming majority of the households aren't the least bit reluctant to call the cops, if something is going down. That includes things that aren't going down, but sound like they are. Fine with me, I'm quiet at home.

I could yell out my bedroom window, and police would be on the scene in 3-5 minutes. Response time in Boston, from my experience, is quite good if it's dire. If it isn't a safety-emergency, response time is kinda frustrating.

When it counts though, it's high speed, and that's partly why I live in a city (that and I gotta be where the shows are).
