I'm not going anywhere - I don't know how many are downstairs. I'm going to make shitloads of noise - get the neighbours involved.
Yeah, I'm lucky, I've got a dog that will at least scare them off for a bit. Add to that all the noise I'm making evens my chances a bit.
Moral of the story - don't be a dick to your neighbours. You might need them one day. They might need you too.
(Yes, I have a family that I will protect with my life. That doesn't include rushing into a scenario I don't fully know, and messing up their chane to escape.

What about the other scenario - if I'm upstairs and I hear a noise downstairs, I'm out the window with the blu-ray as fast as possible - don't want thwe homeowners calling the cops on me. ****, who knows? Maybe I burgled Steven Seagals hosue - he's sure to have a spare fridge upstairs that he's going to protecct.

It was Saturday, July 13 2002. I found the police report earlier this year because it was the 10th anniversary.

I was living alone in rural Georgia about an hour north of Atlanta. Around 3am I stood straight up beside my bed, 100% awake, walked to my dresser and pulled out my .357 revolver. I had no idea why I did that.

Then I heard people in the hallway outside my upstairs bedroom. I heard them running.

Amazingly (to me) I calmly walked down the hall, scanning with my pistol for targets. By the time I made my way outside they were gone. They had backed their car into my driveway to make a quick getaway. I never saw them.

Then I called the cops. I didn't occur to me until days later the safer course would've been to wait in my room, gun drawn, and called 911 from there. My instinct was to give chase.

They broke in through the garage by lifting up the garage door far enough for someone to slip in and unlock the side door's deadbolt. My car was in the garage so they knew someone was home. What would've happened if I had been asleep when they reached my bedroom?

The deputy got there pretty fast considering I was in the middle of nowhere. When he saw my gun I said "if I had woken 5 minutes earlier or later I might've had to fight them". "Sir, in this county I would have kicked their dead bodies as I stepped over them to get your statement. You do what you need to do."

I loved the South.
