Stand at the top of the stairs, around the corner, with shotgun in hand, phone to head calling the po po. I talk nice and loud to the call taker, so the person(s) downstairs hear.

Odds are it is daytime and I was sleeping from night work. Scumbag(s) hear me and leave before they take anything. Or, home invasion, they knew I was home and want to say "hi". So, let them come upstairs and say hello to my little friend. If they want to burglarize my stuff while I stay upstairs waiting for the cops, let them. I have a single-story house with a security door on the front entrance (you'd have to defeat 3 locks on the gate or scale a cinder block wall to get into the back yard) that will take some time to get through.

Then there's the Rottweiler and the German Shepard dogs.

These things should buy me the the 9 seconds I need to reach a gun. Arizona has a castle doctrine law, so using deadly force against a home intruder is justifiable (not that I want that, obviously) - I would hope that knowing I am inside the house with a gun would convince someone that there are easier targets in this world.

Grab my bokken (yes, I have a wooden sword in my room), run downstairs to check on my grandpa. No other choice as his room is on the first floor. If he is not in the house I'll just hide and look from the staircase and call the police.

BTW no one in Singapore has guns so a long wooden sword would do fine.
