I always have my phone in my bedroom.
With the best will in the world, a weapon probably won't put a fire out.
In the event of determined intruders, my house is very small and features a open semi-spiral staircase, with good visibility. It comes up between my room and my son's.
In it's resting state, the staircase alone is almost lethal to all but the careful and sober perambulist.
After shitting like an agricultural muck-spreader, I will be standing at the top of the stairs.
Choice of weapon includes a nightstick by my bed, and several escrima tools in the corner.
There is a samurai sword, but no room to wield it effectively. I suspect my wife could hold the door well enough with it though, just by jabbing it through the opening.
All that said, if they stay downstairs, I imagine they can take what the **** they like.
I thought through it all recently, when 3 guys forced entry to house in the next street, dealt a beating, and took about £300 worth of stuff. (The isolated nature, nice neighborhood, and the amount taken suggest it was probably just a drug related debt collection)
When life gives you lemons... BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!
"what's the best thing about aikido then?"
"To be defeated by your enemies, to be driven by them from the field of battle, and to hear the lamentations of your women." ermghoti -

Before my home invasion, I happened to be a juror in an Atlanta murder trial. It was fascinating, I learned two important laws exist in Georgia. (I am not a lawyer so these are my layman's understanding)
1) Of interest to this thread: Georgia has a Castle Law, meaning I was not required to retreat but rather I may defend my home with an appropriate level of force.
2) Of general interest to martial artists: Georgia has a mutual combat law, ie if two people agree to fight and one dies it is not murder but rather the lesser charge of manslaughter. (Difficult to prove?) -

While deployed there was a rapist who was breaking in to homes. He was targeting homes of those he knew the husband was deployed. So there was some paranoia. When we got home we had found that many of the spoused has gone an recieved training on how to secure the home. My wife had starting keeping the Glock close along with the other things I had in the house. Other wives had shotguns and even an M4.

That reminded me of this story from a few years ago of a serial panty burgler.
