I don't know why people don't try cross training mauy Thai, or a full contact with a light contact. I enjoyed it because karate/TKD made me more agile, better footwork, better form, better depth-perception, IMO.
The full contact half taught me to box, clinch, straight-leg kick better, and guard better. Also toughening up the body to receive and give blows.
Definitely go find yourself some muay thai. Getting DQed for excessive contact sounds like you've got just the right mindset for a hard contact style. Just be warned, once you go Thai, you'll never say bye.
