Set up for Harai Goshi ideas

Not to throw this thread off track but I recently learned harai goshi and really like this throw. But a friend said I should learn o-goshi and maybe tai-otoshi before attempting harai. He said it will help. Any thoughts?

This green belt will let someone with a higher rank answer that one. Some throws work better for folks than others. Build on your strengths. Work on your weaknesses. Right?

your friend is taking a very traditional approach. o goshi is a very good throw for learning the mechanics of turning in and loading uke up. unfortunately it's very difficult to get in randori because few will let you get the grip you need (underhook.)

judoka_uk has some excellent articles on this site as well as on his blog that discuss the choice of throws for a beginner judo player, i suggest you check them out.

How long have you been doing Judo? Most people learn O Goshi before Harai Goshi.

I don't see how Tai Otoshi would have any relevance to Harai Goshi.

Post some video of yourself doing Harai Goshi if you want more advice.

Thanks guys will definitely check out the links and posts. I'm just a beginner and it's been a little over two months since I started so I don't think I'm quite ready to put up a video maybe in the future.

2 months into Judo leave Harai Goshi alone, please. That's my advice.

Tsurikomi Goshi should be your goal for now, as well as learning how to do ukemi properly and control uke when throwing.

I like to use O Goshi first, then move quickly to Tsurikomi Goshi, with tsurikomi and tai sabaki drills.

But you are at a judo club with presumably decent instruction, so give it some time.

Ben
