So, I've just read through all this, and whilst it's obviously a complex subject, and is a potential minefield of potential scholarly debate... I think I've got the gist of it.

Also I will add, conceptually I see mma as kickboxing and wrestling in any which shape or form. Not mixing standup form arts like taichi and wing chun.

Technically you could mix up some untestested soft touch styles and call it "MMA" but how far would it get you in a world of people that actualy hit and submit?

The first two UFC championships were chock full of hillarious (and painful) answers to that question...
