I'm up to the Scourge of God. These are like "how to" manuals. I'm taking the Catoctins and establishing a Neo-Celtic Clan. I'll be happy to ally with your Neo-Germanic/Viking Warbands.
Bring it, Quetzalcoatl! Lugh and Thor will be happy to hand you your scaly, feathered ass!!! -

Why use your hands when you can have a knife?
Why have a knife when you can have a spear?
Why have a spear when you can have a crossbow?
Why use a crossbow when you can have a rifle?
Why have a rifle when you can have a machine gun?
Why have a machine gun when you can have a rocket launcher?
Why have a rocket launcher when you can have a TANK?
Why have a tank when you can have an artillery cannon?
Why have an artillery cannon when you can have a rocket artillery truck?
Why have a rocket artillery truck when you can have a cruise missile cruiser?
Why have a cruiser when you can have a nuclear submarine?
Why have a nuclear submarine when you can have a strategic bomber?
Why have a strategic bomber when you can have a road mobile ICBM?
Why have ICMBs when you can have Fractal Orbrit Bombers?
Why have FOBs when you can have Rods from God?
Why have Rods from God when you can have Orbital Ion Cannons?
Why have Ion cannons when you can have space battleships?
Why have space battleships when you can have an armor plated moon?
Serious portion:
Bows take a lot longer to become proficient with than your average firearm, not to mention giving up a lot in terms of range and stopping power.
Crossbows are easier to use but harder to reload, and still have less range and stopping power than a gun. Not to mention that arrows aren't easy to come by, unless you've mastered crafting your own.
.22 is okay for hunting purposes, easy to carry, and ammo's pretty common...but again, stopping power. I personally would pick a shotgun, with a mix of slugs and shells depending on what you expect to encounter that day. -

I'll stick with a crossbow for a starter and looting if ever needed. Hunt a bit and next thing you know is an entire platoon chasing you. I'm not that keen on letting people know what I'm doing in the area.
A decent crossbow with optics and a bag to store it from the weather effects should do perfectly.
Thanks bullies, from a tree hugger to blood thirsty animal in few easy posts :-)))))))))))
