I can relate...I'm a completely one dimensional fighter. Doing jiujitsu and doing jiu jiujitsu while getting punched in the face are two completely different things. My first two ammy fights consisted of taking my guy down, getting good position, and getting the W via sub. My third ammy fight, the guy came out super fast/aggressive and landed a big bomb, knocking me down. After he piled on, I was able to get my guard pretty easily...and then the punching started. I was able to deflect or kill the power of most of the shots by controlling his head/posture and his biceps, but the punches just kept coming. I found myself keeping my guard closed, and more or less just holding on. I had been shut down; I wasn't taking any serious damage, but I sure as hell wasn't making any headway either. I got mad; I couldn't force myself to open up and get active from the guard. The round ended; I remember my corner tossing me a rag to blow my bloody ass nose into. As the second round began, my opponent came out hot again. I snapped his head down into a guillotine and put him to sleep. Bottom line is, when **** hits the fan, you will not RISE to the occasion, you will FALL to your level of training. After having this experience, I began cross training at another gym that focused more on striking...after several months, I learned how to deal with being punched while in the guard. Subsequently, my game for MMA has dramatically improved.

So GJJ is teh deadly now? Trolling aside, this has been parroted over and over by every self defense intructor/company ever (even/especially the bullshit ones). Sport =/= self defense =/= combat. Applies to everything, even mma.

Its cool that they at least acknowledge the shortcomings of only training bjj for sport.

It's also a cringeworthy splash of BJJ masturbation and sales tactics.
"It's completely different game, bowling to football or whatever" but what changes is just the distance?
And who ever said doing only sports BJJ prepares you for the street?
Wait do they mean MMA or street?
I feel confused and disappointed.

Interesting story about the guy who lost the fight. At the Gracie corporate gyms fight techniques are taught along with the sporting moves.
