I thought I remember seeing a thread on this message board about a Karate Cult in New York where the owner would literally beat and superficially wound his students via some sort of whacky hobo made kung fu gauntlet.
For the life of me though, I can track down the thread.

It absolutely rings a bell, but I don't remember anything more specific than you do. Guy was a miscreant, and an ex-student turned up on the board, IIRC.

Nope. Dojo on LI or some such. He had some street toughs (which is basically what he was) he promoted to BB, so he had a core of guys that could fight he could point to. The training was stuff like finding a coin hidden somewhere while he beat you with a half a broomstick, bullshit like that.
