I think we are creating a lot of the "problem" ourselves.

1. Don't apologize, commend, or condemn any private citizen's speech.
2. Focus on the US has a 1st amendment and can't control any of this speech.
3. Defend embassies.

We don't need to try and figure out the hearts and minds of a billion other people. If we avoid engaging anti free speech groups, we can focus foreign policy and diplomacy on real issues between nations.

One thing that seems kinda weird to me here:

Don't you guys have marines guarding your embassies? I remember the US Embassy in Pretoria always had armed guys in US Uniforms outside, yet the only mention of security I'm seeing in all these articles is of Libyan security forces.

Also, I know a lot of Bullies play Eve Online, one of the guys killed was Vile Rat.

They're typically going to have some type of security. Usually Marines. Not sure of all the details but they could easily be given orders to evacuate everyone or stand their ground without engaging unless X or Y happens. Haven't read enough to see what happened in these recent cases.

That island is a good example of something we oppose: official state religion. We forbid that type of thing in the US. If they took offense to that, we would not be praising their religion, we would say mind your own business.
