Style: Boxing, Grappling
In sparring I tend not to land too many good shots because I'm just out of range. Anyone know any good ways to get a better understanding of my range? Or how to close the distance effectively? Thanks...

Not knowing your style, I'll give the broadest advice I can.
If you can't hit your opponent with a jab, you likely won't hit them with anything else.

When I encounter this problem, I usually find it's down to the following issues:
1. the person I'm sparring has better footwork than me
2. the person I'm sparring has better punching technique than me
3. the person I'm sparring is less worried about getting punched in the face than me
4. the person I'm sparring doesn't gas as quickly as me
Point 1 will improve by doing footwork drills and moar sparring
Points 2 & 3 are kind of connected - they're happier to spend more time just inside my range because they know they can land a sharper punch than me and aren't too worried about catching one of mine.
Point 4 will improve with more cardio, and more importantly moar sparring again - the more you spar, the more you'll relax when you spar, the more relaxed you are the less tired you'll get, the less tired you are the more you'll be able to concentrate on distancing & footwork.
tl; dr: train more + spar more = get better at landing punches

I don't know what you train, but when I started boxing I had the same problem. I guess everybody has, especially if you're more of a natural infighter (i.e. not that tall for your weight).
For me, improving my footwork was the main remedy. Second was to lose my "natural" fear of getting hit in the face and just relaxing a bit more, which helped me getting more fluid overall.
In order to gauge the distance, just keep jabbing. It will keep your opponent on the defense as well while you seek an opportunity to close in for more meaningful blows.
If you happen to be tall for your weight class, you shouldn't have this kind of problem. But if you are, maybe you stiffen up too much and need to relax? No matter your build and what you train (boxing, MT, full-contact karate, whatever), you'll improve a lot with practice, I'm sure.

I'm not sure how you'd feel about prearranged sparring but it certainly helped me out with my range back in the yellow belt days.

On the pads work from the greatest distance you can.
Each combination go out of range and then come in.
