Cross-training in Shihou-ken/Kyokushin and BJJ
I've had previous experiencein Goju ryu karate and Bujinkan taijutsu. Both were OK, but quality dwindled (No surprise). I haven't been training in six months after leaving them both, and I'm looking for more effective arts. I love karate, but wish to try knock-down karate. There's two dojo less than an hour away; one Kyokushin, the other an off-shoot (Shihou-ken). I'll provide links to both, although the Shihou-ken site is kinda crappy.
(Teaches gung fu and tai chi as well. Just want the Kyokushin.)
I also wish to train, primarily, in Muay Thai and BJJ at the Anthracite Combat Club.
Any tips or pointers? Should I do both knock-down AND MMA? Or just stick with MMA? If anyone can provide some feed back on the training in all three, that'd be great. Thanks a bunch.
Personally, I'd get six months or so of BJJ under your belt and then look to start cross-training. Progress is going to be pretty slow if you try to make time for all those different styles at once.
Good point there. Especially when my ground fighting is mediocre.
Depends how much time you've got to train. If you've only got two or three nights a week then do the classes at the MMA place. If you can train every day, then cross train.
I can probably train 4-5 days a week. Good enough?
