    in addition to the golden turtles shown above, and plain old horse stance, i also made bodyweight squats a big part of my routine in the past. my legs are fairly strong (proportionally a lot stronger than my upper body as well) but now that i am in judo, when i turn in, squat down and load up someone larger than me on my back in seoi nage, i don't have the strength to explode out of that position and throw them (this leaves me the much less awesome version of seoi nage where you drag them down with you - meh to that.)

    there is only one exercise that i know of to solve that problem and it's the weighted squat.

    AFAIK there has been a good deal written on the theory that low reps of high weight will develop more functional strength than high reps of low or no weight. it's a theory that seems to (bad pun incoming) carry a lot of weight on this forum, and is considered the way to get stronger.
    the bit about seoi nage is most definitely the truth....there was a Japanese international who used to hit 484lbs at 156lbs BW and he was a SN specialist....most SN specialists are/were VERY strong in the legs relative to their weight.

    To be honest I've eased off a little now I reached my target.

    Grappling has become my main focus now - so only taining weights 1-2 times a week.

    Amen for squats. After having been a lazy **** for a year or so, then having a hernia operation, I finally got back into lifting for the last two months or so. I'm not nearly to where I want to be, but I'm repping 270 now which is at least getting towards respectability. My body weight has been remaining stable, even though I've been eating like a horse. I love the side benefit of the metabolism up-swing, as I'd been packing on some fat during my year of sloth.

    My personal best was 130 kgs (286.5 lbs), two reps with good form (deep back squat), at 83 kgs BW (182.9), after a kyokushin session. Afterwards, I tried to go for 1 rep with 140 but I almost blew it and needed assitance to finish the lift, so it doesn't really count.
    Haven't been lifting for a few months. I'm looking forward to get back to it in january.

    Good article on performing squats and there benefits, I know a lot of people who would be shocked at how wrong their perception is of whats good for your knees and back.
