Seriously that douche-nozzle kills 71 people most of them kids and you guys give him 21 fucking years?? What the **** is wrong with your country?? That bastard should have been burned at the stake. Oh but wait he might have had a mental illness, you know what who the **** cares, it's a **** excuse for that bullshit sentence. Oh and it's only mandatory that he serves 10 of the 21. Nice fucking job Norway, great way to **** over your own people.

that was my reaction as well, *but* the BBC was quick to point out that norway focuses their prison system on reforming criminals, hence the light sentence. they also said that there is no chance he will be released in 10 years, and even after 21 years, the authorities will determine if he is still a risk to society (pretty obvious that they will determine that he *is*) and will have the authority to keep him in prison for the rest of his life. in fact the BBC said that there is a very small chance of him ever being released from prison."Face punches are an essential character building part of a martial art. You don't truly love your children unless you allow them to get punched in the face." - chi-conspiricy
"When I was a little boy, I had a sailor suit, but it didn't mean I was in the Navy." - Mtripp on the subject of a 5 year old karate black belt
"Without actual qualifications to be a Zen teacher, your instructor is just another roundeye raping Asian culture for a buck." - Errant108
"Seriously, who gives a **** what you or Errant think? You're Asian males, everyone just ignores you, unless you're in a krotty movie." - new2bjj

He will never leave. Indefinite incarceration after his 21 are up. Another possibility is that he will be murdered by his fellow prisoners if they decide to ever allow him access to them. Breivik talked a bunch of crap about being associated with Norway's largest criminal gang while younger, which said gang took offense at to the point of making him a marked man.

if only the Norwegian state had taken into account the sentiments of people who know nothing about its society!

So basically he's been given 21 - Life with "possibility" for parole as we would say?
That sounds about average for a murder one beef in places without a death penalty.
Of course we would give him multiple life sentences for multiple murders or something rediculous like "400 years" of multiple sentences running concurrently until the dude croaks.
Basically it all amounts to life in a cage no matter how one parses the language.

Take one look at real crime statistics between Norway and the United States.
Then shut the **** up.
America could learn a lot from Norwegian justice. Our system is relatively broken, chaotic, and uneven..theirs isn't and it shows up in the numbers.
More than 50% of crimes in Norway are traffic related.
And no, Norwegians aren't dumb either. Breivik will never be free again.

Bnet, if you had been given a 21 year sentence on the day you were born, would you be prowling the streets now?
