English Civil War re-enactor disarms knife-wielding robber (twice)

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...#ixzz22rbuK4QB

The grandfather wrenched the knife from the man’s hand and then pinned him to the counter while the shopkeeper dialled 999.

During the brawl, the masked robber drew a second knife – but Mr Thompson disarmed him again before pinning him to the floor and waiting for police.

Mr Thompson is second in command of The Earl of Northampton’s Regiment of Foote in the Sealed Knot.

The group meets regularly at weekends to re-enact Civil War battles in 17th-century costume.

Mr Thompson said he used the skills he learned with the Sealed Knot to disarm the robber.

‘If it wasn’t for the re-enactment group I couldn’t have done it,’ he said.

‘It is never real when we learn how to deal with knives and swords but the movements are for real.’

That's cool but I wish the article described his movements a bit better. "Pull them over the counter defence" has a certain ring to it though.

Jayzus - dealt with two knives. That guy has stones, along with old age and treachery.

This has simply left me wondering why my Wife has not joined up with our local artillery regiment.

Zounds! So LARPing is the real deadly!
Considered in the abstract the boxing ring is an altar of sorts, one of those legendary spaces where the laws of a nation are suspended: inside the ropes, during an officially regulated three-minute round, a man may be killed by his opponent's hands but he cannot be legally murdered. Boxing inhabits a sacred space predating civilization; or, to use D.H. Lawrence's phrase, before God was love. If it suggests a savage ceremony or a rite of atonement it also suggests the futility of such gestures. For what possible atonement is the fight waged if it must shortly be waged again... and again? The boxing match is the very image, the more terrifying for being so stylized, of mankind's collective aggression; its ongoing historical madness.

Normally I would say it was luck, but he was able to reproduce the results. This would have been a more entertaining read if his LARPing was something like game of thrones or Jedi.

Its it just me or are over half the articles about badass dudes beating up robbers involve a old dude. I am glad to hear the old man didn't get hurt.

The article's from the Daily Mail, so its gotta be less than half, since at least half of their articles are half-naked women.
