The Pandaren were indeed in Warcraft III, but if you watch the trailer again there are a number of elements seemingly lifted straight from KFP, especially the music. My guess is that when designing the what the living Pandaren would look like, they borrowed from the movies...which is kind of obvious. The last time I saw Pandaren, they were tiny little sprites, now their mascot is a full size, somewhat more mature version of Po, complete with **** eating grin.
Now from what little I know of Warcraft lore, the Pandaren excel at two things: the martial arts, and brewing stiff alcoholic beverages. -

First, take a seemingly overweight panda bear.
Then make him anthropomorphic, with hearty sense of humor.
And make him a kung fu master.
Give him a straw dǒulì.
And finally place him in the Valley of Peace *cough* I mean on the Isle of Pandaria.

This has only been done thrice in history to my knowledge. This trailer, KFP, and this:

Overweight Panda?!?! How novel! I never would've thought of using a panda in a movie about Fake Chinese Republic of Talking Animals.
Whoa whoa whoa, you're blowing Pixar's mind here! Then make him anthropomorphic, with hearty sense of humor.
He was more of a bumbling-oaf-on-the-way-to-kung-fu-master, which I believe is the plot of at least half of all kung fu movies. And make him a kung fu master.
What a subtle, original way to show that he's an Oriental! The first draft just had a gong go off whenever he came in the scene and started spewing Engrish puns.Give him a straw dǒulì.
They actually stole "Pandaria" from my upcoming Sci-Fi novel Kicking Panda from Pan-Da Prime. And finally place him in the Valley of Peace *cough* I mean on the Isle of Pandaria.
Wow, a Chinese knock-off of an American knock-off of a Chinese kung fu movie! This has only been done thrice in history to my knowledge. This trailer, KFP, and this: -
