A lot of good advice. To answer your question the ear slap works but I know how to do it because I have other techniques to fall back on.

To echo what someone else already said, you don't have to train purely for self defense reasons.
I will tell you I for one don't care at all about the subject of self defense. Seriously I will be 33 in a few days and have never found myself in a fight that I full will knew that I couldn't have just walked away from. I have never been mugged or accosted. I have never been in a situation that would require me to throw down. I know that the odds are I never will be.
To the point I train at a gym that focuses on the sport aspect of BJJ.
I train because I get fat if I don't. I train because I want to live a long healthy productive life. More then any other point I train because it is actually really really fun. By far the best hobby I have ever undertaken and I have a 20 x 10 storage unit full of other hobby crap.

There may be necessity for a sticky to which n00bs can be directed on this topic. Every so often (far too often) somebody, who has never had to deal with an actual takedown-attempt, asks why "just stepping aside/kneeing/chopping the shoulders/whatever" wouldn't deal with takedowns. How much bandwidth do we need to waste? A takedown-defense sticky may reduce the waste.

You do not know what "armchair" means in the sense you just used. He would have to train an art for anyone to "armchair" the results. He is asking hypothetical questions and people are answering with their experiences.
Just to be clear "armchair" is closer to "hindsight is 20/20" and no one has done that in this thread
Anyway go train. That's the only way to stop the hypotheticals you have picked up from the internet and reading fight manuals. I know people that train 1-2 a week for fun.

OP: instead of continuing this thread, you should make a new thread asking the forum for advice on which martial art to take.

Doesn't it just mean that we should practice kneeing until we can use it as proficiently as Silva?
The problem is that you're relying on your opponent being knocked unconcious by the blow, which is not a very solid thing to rely on. Look at Cro Cop vs Fujita; Cro Cop kneed Fujita in the face hard enough that it shattered his orbital, and even this did not stop him from completing the double leg.
And it's not like sprawling STOPS you from kneeing a dude in the head. You can still do such a thing afterwards, once you've secured his head into a knee-friendly position.

If he hold back from battle;
But old age will grant him no truce,
Even if spears spare him.

To slap hard enough to actually hurt people, you'll have to coordinate your arms and legs.

If you go for the ear slap and it doesn't work do you still have time to sprawl or use any of your other techniques?
