USANKF tournaments usually have point sparring and kata as separate events. If Karate did make the cut, why have point sparring? TKD sparring is basically the same, but with heavier contact and more pads. We don't need to watch the same event twice, if they made it in it would probably be with kata. Sure, it's not as much fun as watching two people spar, but at least we wouldn't be watching the same event twice.

Sure we can, because either the people who are out to play tag funnel into their own league so they can enjoy the sport their way, or they adapt to play Karate like the Russians (as per your example) do. So in the end, everyone is happy. (Except the people who lose. So I'll be unhappy.)
