What theories say this? Idiots go headhunting without hand protection all the time in idiot-fights. That's why they're idiots in idiot-fights. What the "theories" might actually say is that, with less protection for the hand, a fist used in headhunting during an idiot-fight is more likely to be damaged than a gloved and wrapped hand.

As for body shots--personal observation from my years in club security (perhaps the experience of others is different): when an idiot is going for your head in an idiot-fight, he may or may not have something in his hand. An idiot who is going for your body more likely than not does have something in it. Poor lighting, speed of the encounter and the point-forward angle of the shank (or whatever) may prevent you from seeing it, but best assume it's there and react accordingly.
