I thought that was your point. I'm disagreeing because they have had Jumping and flying kicks, in old manuals, before it became about flash and trophies. The increase in flash and number of techniques may have increases for the wow factor, but doesn't explain why they appeared before that was an important factor.

The best weapons training I've ever had came through a story as told by a past BJJ coach.
My coach was telling this story, he says. "So I get in this fight with this dude and I take care of him when out comes his friend. This guy is fucking huge. He's like 6'5" must weigh like 350lbs and he's got a baseball bat and comes at me........ I fucking ran. That guy was huge, no way he was going to catch me. **** no I'm not going to take on a guy with a baseball bat, that's fucking stupid." -
