That's the way to do it! It's not just "old school" either. The soap lubricates your skin and conditions the hair which makes for an easy smooth shaving experience. The act of brushing the lather on also pricks up your facial hair so the razor cuts it instead of passing right over.

All this adds up to you getting a clean shaven area in one or two smoth, painless strokes instead of having to apply preasure and reapeatedly "scrape" at your hairs (causing nics and irritation).

Also, be sure to use a genuine aftershave for hygene and skin care reasons. Staph is an ugly mofo. (I'm partial to Old Spice myself, but it never hurts to sniff a few and pick one that best mixes with your personal blend of pheremones. Chicks love a guy that smells edible...)

Aftershave is one thing I have not invested in yet. Thanks for the heads-up, I hadn't thought about the hygiene part of aftershave, I was thinking it was just extra like cologne.

It disinfects and conditions your skin. The pleasant smell is icing on the cake. They are a lot less expensive than cologne too, so that's a plus.

The average size bottle will last for weeks and usualy costs less than $7. I get away with using about a dime size puddle in a cupped hand. Any more than that and I'll wind up smelling the way I imagine Lorezno Lamas smells...

Technically you could get away with witchhazel, rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide from a health standpoint but for the sake of your skin and the way you smell real aftershave is the best way to go.

If you're on a budget, Javex is a decent, refreshing aftershave.

I don't tend to use aftershave or cologne after shaving I tend to use a moisturiser or some other lotion. I always find aftershave dries my skin out.

My favourite shaving soap and aftershave balm is Crabtree and Evelyn's Sienna (not sure if you can get it Stateside).

Nice razor!

You can shave with any blade as long as it's sharpened and stropped properly!! You can get a better shave with the straight razor, and I think it's easier to control than your "regular" shavers.
