Personally, I think I would prefer it to a knife. A little more range, a different angle of attack that allows me to employ my tee ball bat-swinging skills, and lots of extra points for badassery.
Now if only I was still young and could justify in my head blowing that much money on a toy I'll never get to use... -

I wonder how secure the lockign mechanism is. If I miss or it gets blocked, come around and go through my forearm?

My thoughts as well. I have very little doubt this thing is a steaming pile of ****.
The handle appears to be made largely of brass, which is soft. It's a terrible material for weapon making.
Considering the moment of inertia from an impact on the tip of that long blade, you'd have to have quality materials with a hell of a locking mechanism to keep it from breaking. I'd be willing to bet after a few good whacks that thing would snap at one of the two joints. -

You see this kind of stuff at all the suqs (markets) that are held on American bases. They're usually made in Pakistan out of super cheap materials and sold to Americans. I've spent a lot of time in Afghanistan and have never seen an Afghani carrying or using anything like this nor have I ever seen one on a target (I did find a set of nunchucks once though). While it's possible that the Afghanis did use something like this in their past it's most likely something created for the new combat tourism industry.
